Job Description:

To carry out planned and reactive maintenance in the rehoming centre environment, including all equipment and vehicles associated with the rehoming centre. To support the management team in the smooth running and professional presentation of the rehoming centre and contribute to excellent customer service.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Central heating systems; undertake regular checks as advised by manufacturer and arrange annual boiler service
  • Sewage treatment and waste disposal system; undertaken regular checks and servicing as advised by manufacturer.
  • In conjunction with centre management team, have COSSH risk assessments in place for all chemicals used and/or stored on site.
  • Perform and record regular fire safety checks as per Dogs Trust standards
  • Identify, on own, as a result of audits, or through line management instructions, areas of the grounds that require work to maintain a professional and safe environment for staff, visitors and dogs. Undertake identified work.
  • Undertake reactive repair of damaged or non-working items
  • Where work requires specialist equipment, training or is covered under an existing contract, support the centre management team in allowing access to contractors, cordoning off work areas as necessary, supervising the work as required, and ensuring that work undertaken is to the required standard.
  • Identify, on own, as a result of audits or on management instruction, work required to maintain a professional and safe environment in all buildings that comprise Dogs Trust property e.g. kennels, outbuilding, staff accommodation, etc.
  • Undertake reactive repair of damaged or non-working items
  • Perform and maintain a record of pre-start checks of motorised equipment
  • Perform and maintain a record of regular vehicle checks
  • Receive and act upon reports of faults with vehicles
  • Perform inspection of equipment and carry out routine maintenance/cleaning
  • Be a nominated fire warden
  • Use Asset Management software so that an accurate log of work needing contractor involvement is maintained
  • Liaise with contractors

Job Requirements:

  • Work-related maintenance/practical skills qualification(s) related to the role
  • Experience of routine maintenance in a practice working environment
  • Experience of supervising contractors and building relationships
  • Good understanding and awareness of current health and safety legislation
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • A reasonable level of fitness, stamina and mobility is required to complete the varied physical demands of the role
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written).
  • A positive and proactive attitude and willingness to work with members of the public, staff and volunteers.
  • Hard working, enthusiastic and a team player.
  • Reliable and flexible
  • Able to work on own initiative and have good judgement to escalate issues or seek guidance as appropriate.
  • Administrative skills, including use of MS Office and computerised systems
  • Commitment to the aims and objectives of Dogs Trust
  • Full, clean manual UK driving licence and confident driving a variety of vehicles
  • Ability to travel, including staying away from home on occasion, for training, meetings and conferences.
